Situation and comunications

ALCALÀ DE XIVERT is situated in a privileged area of the Mediterranean coastline. Located between the Costa de Azahar (the orange grove coast) an the interior Maestrat, it surprises us with its original countryside, rich, varied and full of contrasts, where plains and mountains alternate with beaches an rocky coastal areas. Here, surrounded by histori, protected by the Irta and Murs mountains, on a great esplanade of a alluvial formation, we find the town of ALCALÀ DE XIVERT. It is harmoniously complemented by the coastline, the Sierra de Irta and the flat plains reaching out to the sea. Today, this environment presents us with all its natural authenticity.

Extraordinary richness from marine fauna and flora to mountain and coastal vegetation. At its heart, we find Las Fuentes, Alcossebre and Cap I Corb. These three centers offer an important tourist infrastructure, which together with the climate, the sea, the beaches and nature give us an ideal place for spending the summer and for resting throughout the rest of the year.

The orography is mainly composed of two large mountain ranges which occupy a large part of the municipal area: La Sierra de las Atalayas de ALCALÀ to the north, with peaks like the Atalaya Grossa at 635m., and the Sierra de Irta, which is parallel to the sea and rises majestically from Alcossebre to Peñiscola, forming other minor foothills like the Sierra de Xivert, which occupies the geographical territorial center. The hydrographic network, is distinguished by a series of dry ravines of regional stony riverbank typology, amongst which feature the Cuevas river, the last section is also known as San Miguel, and the dry riverbeds of Mas, Valldancher, Seguet and Estopet, which are the largest and most used. The mount of the Cuevas river reaches the sea near the watchtower and Cap I Corb, forming a stony delta and well known pond called “l’Estany”.

The average climate is typical of the Mediterranean, with temperatures ranging between 10°C in January and 25°C in August, with an annual average of 15’8°C. Showers are rare and occur mostly in the spring and autumn.
